            The new year is an opportunity to sweep out the old to make way for the new.

            The Clearance Sale is a great opportunity for store owners to clear inventories to make room for new items, and they pass along discount savings to Village customers.

Village Eatery Hosts New Season of Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Events

           Tickets are available now for the 2014 season of murder mystery dinner theater presentations at the Village Eatery by SanzMan Productions Renaissance Murder Mystery Players.

            Tickets are $55 each and include dinner and performance; call the Village Eatery for reservations, (626) 852-1777. Group rates are available, but shows sell out fast, so call soon.

            Feb. 15/16 –  “I’ll Take Murder for $25 Million!” – a game show with murderous consequences.

       Christmas Tree Disposal: The City of Glendora is doing Christmas tree recycling now through Jan. 11. The trees can be placed curbside during regular trash days, city officials said.

       All decorations, stands and tinsel should be removed prior to being left for disposal. Flocking and fire retardant are permissible. For more information, call (626) 914-8214.

Enjoy Breakfast at Glendora Village Restaurants Before Saturday's Christmas Parade

            We suggest you plan to enjoy breakfast before the Glendora Christmas Parade next Saturday, Dec. 14 that starts on The Avenue of Glendora Village. 

            Glendora Avenue will be blocked off for parking, so arrive early to grab a spot at any of the surrounding parking lots.
 

            Then head to any of the Village’s restaurants open for breakfast – Ed’s Place, Classic Coffee, Kara’s Corner, T. Phillips Alehouse and Grill, the Village Vault, and the Village Eatery.

 

            The award-winning Glendora High School Tartan Marching Band steps off the parade at the corner of Bennett and Glendora avenues. The parade proceeds south on Glendora Avenue to Foothill Boulevard, goes west on Foothill to Grand Avenue, then turns north on Grand to Bennett Avenue where it will conclude at Sandburg Middle School and La Fetra Elementary School.

            Special honorees this year are Grand Marshall Gumby and Joe and Joan Rock Clokey, the son and daughter-in-law of Art Clokey who produced the “Gumby” animated series in Glendora. Their visit is in conjunction with the first-ever Gumby Fest to be held in Glendora next June 14, 2014.

            Special recognition goes to “Citizen of the Year” Thom Hill, Glendora Community Heroes Chuck and Trish Gomer, Youth Community Hero Jake Petersen and Senior Community Hero Dr. Orv Mestad.

            Other VIPs participating in the parade include the winning teams from the Glendora Library Trivia Challenge, Crestwood Communities, and Glendora Library's teen event “The Battle of the Books,” No-Brainer Brainiacs. Other dignitaries include Glendora Library's NOP Ambassador Beth Hollingsworth, State elected officials, Glendora City Council and School Board members, and School Superintendent Rob Voors.

            The most important dignitary of all, Santa Claus, will arrive on a fire truck.

            The parade features more than 100 participants, including the Glendora Police Department Honor Guard, various emergency services, equestrian groups, Boy Scout and Cub Scout packs, Girl Scout and Brownie troops, and other groups.  

            Marching bands from neighboring cities will perform holiday music.

            The Glendora Christmas Parade Committee is led by Pat Janes, who leads a team of community volunteers, and the parade is sponsored by the City of Glendora, Glendora Rotary and Glendora Kiwanis. For more information, visit the parade's web site.

Two Glendora Village Shops Show the ‘Reason for the Season’

           Looking for religious gifts and books and Christmas decorations to share the “reason for the season”?

            Glendora Village offers a rarity in Southern California – two stores  offering beautiful, hard-to-find religious items, along with excellent customer service to help you find the perfect gift.

            Far Beyond Pearls (209 N. Glendora Ave., 626-335-2705):  

            “We serve all Christian faith communities and strive to exhibit the holy loving power and presence of God to all,” writes owner Kathy Marchetti in her store’s mission statement.  “Our shop is a celebration of the depth, breath and intrinsic beauty of Christian faith traditions worldwide.” 

             You’ll find gift items carved of Jerusalem marble and Holy Land olive wood (see the Nativity crèche at left), Russian Orthodox icons, jewelry, artworks and even Marchetti’s own beautiful photographs.

            Handmade decorative plaques from Haitian artisans are hand-hammered and chiseled out of metal from oil drums.  Another international hand-crafted gift line is the “Art of the Sacred” solid bronze crosses and plaques from Germany.

            Among the many U.S.-made gifts are hymnal pages for “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” hand-carved in wood with music boxes that play the songs.  

            Bibles translated into more than a dozen languages – including Arabic, Hawaiian, German, Spanish, Navajo, Chinese, Japanese and others – are for sale. Books of all kinds – nonfiction and fiction – for all ages are available.
