Go Bald and Help Fight Childhood Cancers Today, St. Baldrick’s Day

        Even though today is technically St. Patrick's Day, BobbiPins Salon in Glendora Village is celebrating another saint by hosting its annual St. Baldrick's event today, March 17, to raise funds for research to end children’s cancer. 

        Anyone can come in and get involved by having their head shaved to raise funds or drop by to donate to the cause.

         The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.

Get INSPIRE-d on April 5

        INSPIRE 2014, A Journey to Health and Happiness for women, is sponsored by Azusa Pacific University and the ARDENT Group. The free event takes place Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m-noon at APU’s Wilden Atrium.

        Enjoy healthy living discussions by ARDENT members Tina Schneider of Spin 360, Dr. Karen Westermoe, and Lindsey Rehfeld of Visiting Angels.

        There will be a discussion on the benefits of happy living and how giving back contributes to health and happiness. WINGS, Women In Need Growing Strong, who provide services for battered woman will be the main focus of giving back to the community.

        A fashion show will be held featuring ARDENT businesses Fiorina, Da Avere, Luxe Salon and Glendora Village Goldsmith.

        Proceeds from drawings and donations from INSPIRE will benefit the WINGS organization.

Chalk Festival Organizers Invite Artists to Participate April 12

            Artists of all ages are invited to show their talents on the sidewalks of Glendora Village during its annual Chalk Festival on Saturday, April 12 (rain date April 19).

            The eighth annual Chalk Festival is sponsored by the Glendora Village Business Improvement District.

Best 3-D winner at 2013 Chalk Festival

            Artists compete in three age divisions: Juniors (10-13 years), $10 entry fee; Students (14-17 years), $10 fee; Adults (18+ years), $20 fee. Team participation is limited to two individuals per exhibit.

            Registration forms will be available at Village Goldsmith, 158 N Glendora Ave, Glendora, CA 91741, along with registration fees.

            Space is limited, so artists should sign up as soon as possible for this in-demand showcase.

            More than $500 in cash prizes will be awarded :  Best of Show $100, Crowd Favorite $100, best 3D Design $100. There will be two winners in each division:  $75 adult winners, $50 student winners, $25 junior winners.

            The popular Children’s Chalk Garden returns to the parking lot adjacent to Southland Properties. This is an opportunity for little ones who are too young to participate as an actual artist to try their hand drawing with chalk on 2-foot by 2-foot squares for 50 cents for a small bag of chalk.

            For the first time, there will be a Community Canvas on The Avenue and a Featured Artists Arena in the Village Plaza.

Glendora Chamber of Commerce Offers Scholarships

           The Glendora Chamber of Commerce has announced its 2014 Scholarship program.

            Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded (or divided) at the committee’s discretion.

 

            Applications are due May 2, 2014, and it’s is suggested that students start early to complete the process.

            Scholarship criteria:

·        The candidates will have expressed intent to follow a business curriculum at an accredited two or four-year college/university.

·        Candidates will have minimum 3.5 non-weighted GPA.

·        Candidates will have demonstrated a leadership role in student government, team or individual sports, band, pep squad, community, church or other extra-curricular activity.

·        Candidates must reside in Glendora. 

            These scholarships will be awarded on a merit basis. All funds will be directed to the institution’s financial aid office or office of the registrar in the candidate’s name. 

            Finalists must be available for interviews in early May. Family members of the scholarship committee shall be ineligible to apply for this award.

Keener Music Studio Sets 'Disney's Beauty & the Beast Jr.' Auditions for March 30

            Keener Music Studio and Top Billing Entertainment Performance Academy are holding auditions for their fifth main stage production, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.” on Sunday, March 30 from 1-4 p.m. with callbacks for leads and principals at 6 p.m. at Jazzercize, 167 N. Glendora Ave., Glendora, CA 91740.

            Performers 4 through 18 years old are invited to audition (performers older than 18 are by Director’s invitation only).

            Those doing auditions should wear dance attire and bring 16 bars of Broadway sheet music to sing (including songs from the show). An accompanist will be provided.

            Performers who do not want a vocal solo or lead role need only sign-up at 1 p.m. and do not have to audition.

            Rehearsals start April 5 and will generally be Fridays 6-9 p.m., Saturday 2-6 p.m., and Sundays 1-5 p.m. in Covina. Not every cast member will be called for every rehearsal.

             “Every performer that auditions is guaranteed a role; we are a ‘no cuts’ performing arts group, and we try to feature each performer as a soloist if possible,”  said Kristina Keener Ivy, who will be directing and producing the show Choreographer will be Jamie McMahon.  

            “Additionally, there is no cost to participate as long as the students perform in our Disney-themed fundraiser on May 10 and 11 at Baldwin Park Performing Arts Center, sell five $15 tickets to the Disney Fundraiser, ten $20 tickets to ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and sell $100 worth of program advertisements,” Keener added. “We do offer family discounts and scholarships.” For more details, see the website.

Executive Women International Announce Scholarships

            Glendora Florist owner Dalel Snider is president of Executive Women International (EWI®) Pomona Valley Chapter, and she's sharing some news about scholarships the group is offering.

            The professional business organization brings together individuals from diverse businesses to promote member firms, enhance personal and professional developments and encourage community involvement.  EWI has chapters in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

            One way EWI encourages community involvement, Dalel explained, is offering assistance to adults in the Inland Empire community who are in transitional situations and need financial aid to further their education in their career pursuit. 

            EWI Pomona Valley is offering scholarships through its Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Program.  Applications are now being accepted through March 15.

            Candidates must meet this criteria:
            •              show financial need
            •              be socially, physically and economically disadvantaged adults
            •              be heads of households with small children
            •              be displaced homemakers

            Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

            •         utilize personal assessment and/or re-entry programs available through colleges, community agencies, service groups, or career professionals
            •         clearly define career goals and objectives
            •         specify the educational requirements to attain above goals and objectives
