Only 8 More Days Until Wine Walk 2014 -- Get Your Tickets Now!

 

            It’s only eight days until Wine Walk 2014 along the Avenue of Glendora Village – next Saturday, Feb. 8, from 6-9 p.m.

            The event will go on, rain or shine. Check-in begins at 5:15 p.m. at Meda and Glendora Avenue. Late arrivals may pick up tickets at Martha’s Candy, 133 1/2 Glendora Ave.

            For just $35 (presale) you’ll get to stroll through the Village to sample 15 pourings of various California red and white wines at 30 Village businesses – stores, salons, spas, offices and more – along with delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by restaurants located in the Village and throughout Glendora. Each Wine Walk ticket includes 15 pours, wristband and wine glass.

            Music will be played by a variety of professional musicians throughout the Village, including downtown merchants SING INC and Keener Music Studios.

       Knot Too Shabby is offering its popular Painting Passports ($225) to the store’s weekly “free-paint” days for 2014. Operation Phoenix begins

        The Glendora Community Conservancy/San Gabriel MountainsRegional Conservancy  has begun “Operation Phoenix” literally rising out of the ashes of last week’s Colby Fire that burned 400 of the 700 acres of Conservancy-owned watershed properties in the San Gabriel Foothills Corridor.

       The Conservancies are already getting promises of recovery and renewal with help from the California Conservation Corp/LA County Fire Department, Azusa Pacific University, and regional teachers and professors offering to help with fire ecology research, student projects, Scouts, rehabilitation, and recovery/restoration projects. 

       You can help by making donations to the GCC/SGMRC. 100% of donations go to restoration of the burned lands.

Glendora Village Music Schools Students Perform at Wine Walk 2014

         Not only is Wine Walk 2014 Saturday, Feb. 8, 6-9 p.m. a great opportunity to sample fine California wines and delicious hors d'oeuvres from Glendora restaurants, you can also enjoy the talents of performers from two music schools in Glendora Village.

            The Keener Music Studio is run by Kristina Keener Ivy, who offers private music lessons in voice, piano, guitar, ukelele, and other instruments for all ages. She also runs Top Billing Entertainment, a San Gabriel Valley non-profit performing arts group.  

            SING INC features six studio rooms, as well as a video and audio recording room and an impressive stage area for performances and group classes. Visitors are invited to “Try It Out” to learn what SING INC offers, and there will be an Open Mic night that’s open to the public for aspiring singers on Jan. 31.

            Thirty Village businesses – merchants, spas, salons, realtors and professional services – will be pour stations serving California red or white wines and delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by restaurants located in the Village and throughout Glendora. Each Wine Walk ticket is good for 15 pours, wristband and wine glass.

Fire Response Shows What Makes Glendora “The Pride of the Foothills”

                As we awoke to our Thursdays yesterday, we were greeted by flames, smoke and sirens.

                And it became evident, too, that we also woke to why Glendora and its citizens can rightly claim to be the Pride of the Foothills: Neighbors helping neighbors.

                A young man was given the assignment by firefighters (and a fire hose) to keep an eye on a burning palm tree.  His mom sustained first degree burns on her back from burning palm fronds as she went to help their neighbor.

                A man’s relative brought in his moving company’s trucks to help neighbors move belongings in a safe, timely manner.

                Neighbors gave first-hand accounts of the fire on camera to TV news reporters or by phone to local news shows. Such reports helped those beyond the evacuation areas keep track of what was going on.

                People turned to social media to share photos and let friends/relatives know their status.

                Many  posted on Facebook about families who lost their homes and needed new lodgings, and then received many offers about available homes and donations.

                Heartfelt prayers for safety were also transmitted via social media.

                A big “THANK YOU” to the U.S. Forest Service and Los Angeles County firefighters for battling flames back from neighborhoods. At last count five homes were lost; it looked like so many more would be lost. The Glendora Police Department and other safety agencies are to be commended for keeping the situation calm and organized.

                We wish those who lost homes or property a speedy return to their lives before they woke to smoke and sirens. One thing is certain – they’ll certainly get help from their Glendora neighbors.
