            It’s not too late to RSVP for INSPIRE 2014 tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon at Azusa Pacific University’s Wilden Auditorium. INSPIRE is sponsored by APU and The ARDENT Group.

            Admission is free.

            Health talks will be given by Dr. Karen Westermoe, Spin 360 and Visiting Angels. A fashion show will be provided by Fiorina, Luxe Salon, Da Avere and Village Goldsmith. Floral arrangements are provided by Glendora Florist and entertainment by Sing Inc.

            Raffle Tickets will be available for purchase to support WINGS, an organization that provides a continuum of integrated services in an effort to end domestic violence and homelessness one family at a time.

            As you shop in the Village tomorrow, be sure to check out Knot Too Shabby’s Bazaar at the corner of Bennett Avenue and Glendora Avenue. Owner Michele Rivard has had plenty of vendors apply to sell their wares Saturday, she said.

            “It is truly amazing how much talent and creativity is within arm’s reach of our own little store. Not to mention, that the notion of ‘shabby chic’ and ‘vintage’ is such a broad category that encompasses anything from re-purposed home furnishings to jewelry ... and, we're going to have a little bit of everything represented!” she explained.

            Other Bazaars will be held the first Saturday in May and June – May 3 and June 7. Those who enjoy painting furniture or creating shabby chic style crafts can showcase their works, earn a little money and give some purpose to their hobbies.

More Fun Added to Glendora Village’s Chalk Festival, April 12

           So far, about 75 artists of all ages will be showing their talents on the sidewalks of Glendora Village during its annual Chalk Festival on Saturday, April 12 (rain date April 19).

            The eighth annual Chalk Festival is sponsored by the Glendora Village Business Improvement District.

            Artists will compete in three age divisions: Juniors (10-13 years), $10 entry fee; Students (14-17 years), $10 fee; Adults (18+ years), $20 fee. Team participation is limited to two individuals per exhibit.

Best Color -- Adult Division, 2013

            Registration forms are available at Village Goldsmith, 158 N. Glendora Ave., Glendora, CA 91741, along with registration fees.

           More than $500 in cash prizes will be awarded:  Best of Show $100, Crowd Favorite $100, best 3D Design $100. There will be two winners in each division:  $75 adult winners, $50 student winners, $25 junior winners.

            The popular Children’s Chalk Garden returns to the parking lot adjacent to Southland Properties. This is an opportunity for little ones who are too young to participate as an actual artist to try their hand drawing with chalk on 2-foot by 2-foot squares for 50 cents for a small bag of chalk.

            For the first time, there will be a Community Canvas with the theme “Everything Glendorable” will be featured for $1 a square. Featured Artists Arena in the Village Plaza will include free face painting and a balloon artist, a caricature artist for $5 per portrait, painter Lucienda Chalmers, handmade cigar box musical instruments creator Richard Briggs and handmade ceramic bowls by Celia Hurera.

            Families can take photos at wooden stand-up scenes along the Avenue. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day by performers from the Keener Music Studio and Sing Inc.

Spring Comes to The Avenue of Glendora Village

            Spring became official and merchants along the Avenue are already getting ready.

             Andrews Inc. clothing store wants you to refresh your wardrobe with a couple events.

            First, through Sunday, make a $100 purchase of Brighton items and receive the “Brighton Raindrops and Darling Dots” umbrella for free.

            Also Andrews is offering two opportunities to customize your wardrobe:

            Last but not least, you can always tell what holiday is coming up by how Glendora Florist owner Dalel Snider has the store windows decorated, whether its hearts for Valentine’s Day or big wreaths for Christmas. Here’s the Easter 2014 edition:

St. Baldrick’s Day – When Going Bald is a Good Thing

            Bobbi Pins Salon hosted its St. Baldrick’s Day cutathon last Monday to raise funds to fight childhood cancers.

            Manager Kasey Lane opened the salon on a Monday, when it’s usually closed, to host the event.

            Seven people, ages 25-60, had their heads shaved for this good cause. Between their donations and others, the BobbiPins crew (pictured below) raised $1,050.

 

            St. Baldrick’s Day started in 2000 at Jim Brady’s Pub in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day. The goal to raise $17,000 by shaving 17 heads turned out to raise $109,000 (with 19 people having their heads shaved).

            In 2012, the milestone $100 million in childhood cancers research grants was reached.

Empty Bowls Benefit Continued Fight Against Hunger

             “Glendora merchants have a big heart,” said Lynn Hendricks, who has organized the Empty Bowls fundraiser to fight hunger for 11 years.

            This year, $4,200 was raised at the Soup Supper Benefit last Friday at First Christian Church. 

              The giving didn’t stop that night. Bowls continue to be purchased by contacting the church at FirstChristianGlendora@verizon.net or calling (626) 335-2240.  The Art Center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays so people can purchase bowls through the end of this month.

            Donations are also accepted throughout the year for the project at First Christian Church, 300 N. Glendora Ave., P.O. Box 698, Glendora, CA 91740.

            The purchase of one bowl provides 25 meals for a family of four. Funds raised help buy groceries from Shepherd’s Pantry or families, meals at the Cold Weather Shelter or emergency food vouchers for families in need.

            More than 100 potters contributed bowls. “Our champion bowl providers are the students and alumni of Professor Michael Hillman at Citrus College, students and instructors at the Tri Community Adult Education program a.k.a. Pioneer Potters, and retired Glendora police officer Alan Wadham,” Lynn said.

            “Our Souper Donors! These are the restaurants who provided soup: Frisella’s, T. Phillips, Kara’s Corner, Ed’s Place, Village Kitchen Shoppe, Village Vault, Sushi & I, The Eatery, Domenico’s Jr., Lucca Bella, The Continental, Chili’s, Sergio’s,” she added.

            Other businesses that contributed to making the event a success were the Azusa Pacific Bakery located on Foothill Boulevard that donated bread, Southland Properties providing bottled water, Cake Mamas providing cup cakes for the volunteers and Classic Coffee providing coupons for a free coffee for the participants that evening.

 

            Make plans to support the project by purchasing a handmade ceramic cup at Classic Coffee, Nov. 14, from 5 - 7 p.m.
